[Mycobacterium culture positive] How to treat, how to treat

Is a positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis test pulmonary tuberculosis?

A positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis test does not necessarily mean pulmonary tuberculosis; it only indicates that the patient has tuberculosis. Whether a positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis test is pulmonary tuberculosis depends on the samples from which it is found, isolated, and cultured.

If Mycobacterium tuberculosis is isolated and cultured from sputum or pleural effusion, or found in the lavage fluid of fiberoptic bronchoscopy, it indicates pulmonary tuberculosis. If Mycobacterium tuberculosis originates from other organs and tissues, it is considered extrapulmonary tuberculosis. In most cases, the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum indicates type III pulmonary tuberculosis. If Mycobacterium tuberculosis is isolated and cultured from pleural effusion, it is pulmonary tuberculosis, which is type IV tuberculous pleurisy. Mycobacterium tuberculosis can invade various organs in the body, and it is more commonly associated with pulmonary tuberculosis. For extrapulmonary tuberculosis such as tuberculosis, renal tuberculosis, osteotuberculosis, and lymphatic tuberculosis, if Mycobacterium tuberculosis is isolated and cultured from cerebrospinal fluid, it will be diagnosed as tuberculous meningitis. Therefore, it cannot be solely judged that a positive Mycobacterium tuberculosis test indicates pulmonary tuberculosis.

When Mycobacterium tuberculosis is detected, it is recommended to go to the hospital for further diagnosis as soon as possible. If diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, it is necessary to receive treatment with drugs such as isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, ethambutol, and others promptly. At the same time, it is important to follow the treatment principles of early, regular, appropriate, full course, and combined treatment. During the treatment, medication should be taken according to the doctor’s instructions on time, and regular follow-up examinations should be conducted.
