Is Dendrobium officinale the same as Dendrobium?
In daily life, many of us choose to see a traditional Chinese medicine doctor when we are sick, thinking that the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine is stronger, and taking Chinese herbs does not cause pressure on the body’s stomach. Dendrobium officinale and Huoshan Dendrobium officinale are two kinds of Chinese herbs in the Chinese medicine, widely used in the treatment of various diseases, and have very good efficacy. Many people think they are the same herb, but in fact, they are different. Let’s take a look at the differences between Dendrobium officinale and Huoshan Dendrobium officinale together.
Dendrobium officinale and Huoshan Dendrobium officinale are two different types of plants under the same genus. Huoshan Dendrobium officinale is the dried stem of the orchid Huoshan Dendrobium officinale. It is harvested from November each year to March of the following year, after harvesting, the residue is removed, some of the roots are cut off, and it is twisted into a spiral while being heated and then dried or cut into sections. Generally, natural drying or low-temperature drying can be used. Dendrobium officinale is the cultivated product of the orchid Dendrobium fimbriatum, Dendrobium chrysanthum, and Dendrobium rostratum, as well as the fresh and dried stems of the same plants. It can be harvested at any time of the year as it grows throughout the year, and the roots and fine sand can be used fresh after removing them. After harvesting, the residue is removed, the stems are slightly scalded with boiling water, and they are rubbed and dried until the leaf stalks are clean, and then they are dried.
The characteristics of Dendrobium officinale and Huoshan Dendrobium officinale are also not entirely the same. Dendrobium officinale: fresh Dendrobium is oblate-cylindrical or cylindrical, diameter 0.4-1.2 cm, about 30 cm long. The outer skin is light green, the leaves are smooth with longitudinal grooves, grow quickly and clearly, the color is deeper, and there are leaf stalks on the nodes. The flesh of Dendrobium officinale is juicy and very easy to break, with a slightly bitter taste and a lingering sweet aftertaste, with a certain粘性 when chewed. Huoshan Dendrobium officinale: it is spiral or bullet-shaped, usually 2-6 spiral grooves, when the stem is straightened, it is 3.5-8 cm long, diameter 0.2-0.4 cm. The surface is light green or slightly orange yellow, with fine longitudinal wrinkles, obvious, sometimes with grayish white leaf stalks on the nodes, and a short root at one end, visible at the stem bottom. The material is very reliable, but very easy to break, the cross-section is flat, the taste is light, and there is stickiness when chewed.
The efficacy of Dendrobium officinale and white Dendrobium officinale has similar effects, but there are also differences. Dendrobium officinale: benefits the stomach and generates fluid to relieve thirst, nourishes Yin and clears heat. Huoshan Dendrobium officinale: generates fluid to relieve thirst, strengthens the spleen and nourishes the stomach; nourishes Yin and clears heat; moistens the lungs and relieves cough, benefits the kidneys; clears the eyes and strengthens the waist.
The difference and function between Dendrobium officinale and Huoshan Dendrobium officinale are roughly like this. Compared to Dendrobium officinale, Huoshan Dendrobium officinale has higher efficacy and a wider range of treatment, although Dendrobium officinale is good, it should not be taken arbitrarily. It is not suitable for patients with weak spleen and stomach, and is more suitable for patients with kidney Yin deficiency.
