The Function of Acupoints of the Lung Meridian of Hand Taiyin

The Lung Meridian of Hand Taiyin is a key vein running on the inside of the arm, belonging to the lung. This meridian has 11 acupoints on one side (a total of 22 acupoints on both sides), with two acupoints located at the upper end of the chest, and nine acupoints scattered on the radial side of the palm of the upper limb. The first acupoint is Zhongfu, and the last acupoint is Shaoshang. The Shu-point of this meridian is mainly used to treat respiratory symptoms and the symptoms along the path of the meridian.

Zhongfu: 1 cun inward from Yunmen, in the凹痕 between the third intercostal space above the breast, where the main artery corresponds to the hand, and it is taken by tilting the head back. This acupoint is the meeting point of the hand Taiyin lung meridian and the foot Taiyin spleen meridian, and it has the effects of nourishing lung Qi deficiency and treating cough and asthma.

Yunmen: Below the Jugu acupoint, 2 cun apart on both sides of Qihu. Massaging this acupoint is effective for sore throat, chest pain, cough with phlegm, difficulty in breathing, fever, soreness of the limbs, shoulder pain, back pain, etc.

Chengdu Tianfu: 3 cun below the axilla, on the radial side of the biceps brachii (close to the thumb side). This acupoint can treat uncontrolled nosebleed, hematoma on the head, dizziness, sudden cold, asthma, pain or numbness on the radial side of the upper arm.

Xiaobai: In the posterior arm area, 4 cun below the axillary anterior crease, on the radial side of the biceps brachii.

Chize: In the elbow area, in the凹痕 of the radial side of the biceps brachii tendon. This acupoint can nourish lung Qi deficiency, moisten the lung and throat, and relieve toxicity and pain.

Kongming: In the posterior upper arm area, 7 cun above the transverse crease on the palmar side of the wrist, on the line connecting Chize and Taiyuan. This acupoint is the gathering place of the Qi and blood of the large intestine meridian, and it mainly treats headache, fever without sweating, and cough with asthma.

Lieque: On the upper arm, 1.5 cun above the transverse crease on the palmar side of the wrist, between the short extensor pollicis and the long extensor pollicis tendons, in the凹痕 of the groove of the long extensor pollicis. This acupoint is effective for facial paralysis, headache, neck discomfort, numbness of the upper limb, weakness of the elbow, palm heat, cough, expectoration, chest tightness, shortness of breath, sore throat, nasal diseases, and toothache.

Jingqu: In the posterior upper arm area, 1 cun above the transverse crease on the palmar side of the wrist, between the radial styloid process and the radial artery.

Taiyuan: In the anterior wrist area, between the radial styloid process and the navicular bone, in the凹陷 of the extensor pollicis longus muscle on the ulnar side. This acupoint is the original point of the lung meridian, and it is very effective in nourishing lung Qi deficiency, resolving phlegm and stopping cough, and supplementing Qi and blood.

Yuji: On both sides of the hand, at the center of the first metacarpal radial side, the fatty meat际处. It has the effects of clearing the lung, moistening the lung, and benefiting the throat.

Shao Shang: On the finger, on the radial side of the distal phalanx of the thumb, 0.1 cun above the corner of the nail root.

The circulation route of the hand Taiyin lung meridian

The hand Taiyin lung meridian originates from the stomach, connects with the intestines below, returns along the upper mouth of the stomach, crosses the diaphragm, and belongs to the lung. It then extends horizontally from the throat to the armpit below, descends along the inner side of the arm, and runs before the hand Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians. It goes down to the elbow bend, along the inner side of the upper arm along the radius bone (the thumb position), enters the cun mouth (the radial side of the wrist, the location of the pulse-taking in traditional Chinese medicine), and enters the great toe muscle (the rich muscle at the thumb position of the palm heart, famous for resembling fish skin), along the edge of the little toe muscle, and expands at the radial side of the thumb tip. Its branch pulse originates from the upper side of the radial styloid process behind the wrist, moves to the back of the hand to the radial side of the little finger tip, where the Qi passes to the Yangming small intestine meridian.

The functions and effects of the hand Taiyin

This meridian point is mainly used to treat respiratory diseases such as cough, hemoptysis, sore throat, and other symptoms of lung-related diseases, as well as other symptoms on the network of the meridian, such as cough, rough breathing, restlessness, chest tightness, shortness of breath, soreness and coldness on the inner side of the arm, or hand palm heat, etc.
