Differences between Zhu Ling decoction and Wuling Powder

Both Zhu Ling decoction and Wuling Powder have the function of fragrantizing and removing dampness. The syndrome of Wuling Powder is caused by internal heat of body fluid and poor vaporization of the bladder, and is a warm Yang transforming Qi and removing dampness agent; Zhu Ling decoction treats the syndrome due to dampness-heat entering the interior, water-heat intermingling, burning and consuming yin fluid to form interior heat and kidney yin deficiency, water fluid retention, and is a formula for removing dampness, clearing heat, detoxifying, and nourishing yin. Below is an analysis of the differences between the two.

Wuling Powder: fever due to wind stroke, six or seven days of confusion and restlessness, with an exterior syndrome, thirst for drinking water, vomiting after drinking water, so it is called ‘small water reversal’, and Wuling Powder is the treatment. Taiyang disease with confusion in the exterior, internal heat from water饮, causing dry mouth; due to internal heat from water饮, drinking water induces vomiting. Treatment should resolve both the exterior and replenish deficiency, promote diuresis and remove dampness, using Wuling Powder (Zhu Ling Powder).

Wuling Powder is still a Taiyang syndrome, so there is an exterior syndrome, which cannot be explained. The pulse is floating, the body has coldness, mainly manifested as white fur, a fat tongue, uncomfortable urination, water cannot transform into Qi, so the throat is dry, desire for drinking water, but the body has a lot of water, so water intake induces vomiting.

Bai Zhu, Fu Ling (raw), Zhu Ling (each two qian), Zexie (three qian), Guizhi (one qian)

The first five ingredients are for powder. Take with white drink, one chi bi a day, three times a day. Or soak in dry powder and take it warm to induce a slight sweat. According to Wuling Powder, it treats the invasion of pathogenic factors in the Taiyang meridian. Thirst and urinary retention, drinking water and vomiting, is called ‘small water reversal’, and Wuling Powder is the treatment. The later generation did not understand this meaning. They often used Wuling Powder to treat kidney yin deficiency and exhaustion. Excessive dryness of water. Fever and thirst will inevitably increase. Is it the fault of the formula? Moreover, there are those who use four Ling without Guizhi. How can they know that this formula relies entirely on the acrid and warm properties of Guizhi so that the formula does not become stuffy. The user of the formula should understand this. It is not worthy of the great sage’s line.

Zhu Ling decoction is different from Wuling Powder. It is a syndrome of Shaoyang transforming to Yang or Shaoyin, so there is a syndrome of cold and dampness. Therefore, Changshi and Zexie are used to clear heat, and Ejiao is used to nourish blood deficiency. Afterward, Ejiao is used to nourish blood deficiency.

In addition, if constipation cannot use Wuling Powder to prevent internal accumulation.

Zhu Ling decoction:

To treat thirst for drinking water, urinary retention, and diarrhea in the Shaoyin disease, cough with nausea and thirst, and restless sleep, the Wuling Powder without Fu Ling and Guizhi is added with equal parts of Changshi and Ejiao cake. Boil the decoction, remove the dregs, and take it warm, three times a day. According to this, these are the drugs for Shaoyang and Shaoyin. Wuling Powder uses Fu Ling to guide water and nourish dryness. It also uses Guizhi’s acrid and warm properties to invigorate its fluid. This uses Changshi to clear heat and detoxify, and Ejiao cake to sweeten and moisten to maintain blood. Sweat is the fluid of blood. Therefore, those with excessive sweating and thirst should not use it.

The source of the infection formula is from the Treatise on Cold Damage: ‘If the pulse is floating and there is fever, thirst for drinking water, and urinary retention, Zhu Ling decoction is the treatment for this condition.’

The composition of the infection formula includes Zhu Ling peeled, Fu Ling, Zexie, Ejiao cake, and Changshi powder, each one liang [each 9g].

The method of using the infection formula involves boiling the first five ingredients in four liters of water, then reducing to two liters, removing the dregs, melting Ejiao cake, and taking it warm, seven measures a day, three times a day.

The song for the infection formula uses Zhu Ling decoction with Zhu Fu Ling, combined with Zexie, Changshi, and Ejiao cake.
